Healthy Diet & Staying Hydrated While Living on a Boat
Life on the water is an adventure, but maintaining a healthy diet and staying hydrated can be challenging. Limited storage space, unpredictable schedules, and the temptation of marina snacks can throw even the best intentions off course.
With a bit of planning and creativity, though, it’s absolutely possible to fuel your body with nutritious meals and keep dehydration at bay.
Stock Smart for Small Spaces
On a boat, every inch of storage counts. Focus on versatile ingredients that can be used in multiple recipes.
Here are a few staples I always keep on board:
Canned Goods: Think beans, tomatoes, and fish like tuna or salmon. Canned chicken can work, too!
Grains: Rice, quinoa, and oats are compact and long-lasting.
Fresh Produce: Choose hearty items like apples, carrots, and cabbage, which last longer without refrigeration.
Herbs & Spices: A small collection of seasonings can transform any dish.
When possible, stock up on fresh, local produce at farmers’ markets or small-town grocery stores. Not only is it often better quality, but supporting local businesses is a win-win!
Meal Prep for Smooth Sailing
Cooking in a boat galley can be tight, so meal prep is your best friend. Set aside time to chop veggies, portion snacks, and cook ahead when you can access shore power or a marina kitchen. If you’re about to have a long day on the water, meal prep can also mean you don’t have to prepare a meal while underway or when you’re already exhausted.
Try these quick, boat-friendly meal ideas:
Breakfast: Overnight oats with fruit and nuts or a veggie-packed scramble.
Lunch: Wraps filled with hummus, fresh veggies, and protein.
Dinner: One-pot meals like stir-fries, pasta, or hearty soups. We often make chicken curry with rice.
Freezing meals like chili or curry in small portions is a lifesaver for busy days or when you’re too tired to cook, if you have a freezer on board!
Hydration is Non-Negotiable
Dehydration is a real risk on the water between the sun, wind, and salty air. We’ve found that staying hydrated can also help keep you ahead of potential seasickness.
Here’s how to stay ahead of it:
Always Have Water On Hand: Invest in refillable water bottles and keep them accessible throughout the boat.
Set Hydration Reminders: It’s easy to forget to drink, so set alarms or use an app to remind you.
Flavor It Up: Add slices of lemon, cucumber, or berries to make water more appealing.
Watch Your Caffeine & Alcohol Intake: Both can dehydrate you, so balance them with extra water. We’ve found caffeine can also contribute to seasickness, so watch out!
A reusable water pitcher with a filter is a great tool for ensuring your drinking water tastes fresh, even if your onboard water source doesn’t.
Keep Snacks Healthy
Snacking is inevitable on the water, especially when cruising for long hours. Choose options that provide sustained energy:
Trail mix (DIY with your favorite nuts, seeds, and dried fruit)
Whole-grain crackers with nut butter
Fresh fruit or veggie sticks with hummus
Homemade energy balls or granola bars
Having healthy snacks prepped and ready to go helps avoid less nutritious temptations.
Embrace Local Cuisine
One of the joys of traveling the Loop is sampling local flavors. Balance indulgences by keeping other meals lighter and full of fresh ingredients. Savoring a beignet in Louisiana or BBQ in Tennessee is part of the journey—just enjoy it mindfully.
Make It Fun for the Family
If you’re cruising with kids, involve them in meal planning and preparation. They’re more likely to eat healthy foods if they helped create them! Let them pick a new fruit or vegetable to try at each stop or help assemble wraps and salads.
Monitor Your Body’s Needs
Traveling by boat can bring unpredictable schedules and weather. Listen to your body’s signals—whether it’s hunger, thirst, or fatigue—and adjust accordingly. Keep your energy steady with small, frequent meals rather than waiting until you’re starving.
Staying healthy on the water doesn’t have to be complicated. With some thoughtful planning, you can enjoy delicious meals, stay hydrated, and feel your best while exploring the Great Loop.
