How to Continue Doing the Things You Love While Cruising the Great Loop

Life on the Great Loop doesn’t mean giving up the hobbies and activities you love. Instead, it offers the chance to adapt and even discover new ways to enjoy them.

Whether your family is into sports, music, or creative pastimes, here are some ideas to keep your passions alive while cruising.

Staying Active with Sports

The Great Loop provides plenty of opportunities for physical activity:

  • Explore with Portable Equipment: We use an inflatable paddleboard to explore calm waters around our anchorages. It’s an incredible way to experience nature up close while staying active.

  • Local Parks and Facilities: Whenever we can, we find pickleball courts at local parks. Many parks also have basketball hoops, so everyone can practice or play a quick game.

  • On-the-Water Activities: Kayaking, swimming, and snorkeling are natural fits for a cruising lifestyle. Bring the gear you love and embrace water sports!

Keeping Up with Music

Music has always been an important part of our family life. While space is limited on a boat, creativity helps us stay in tune:

  • Portable Instruments: We have an electric piano that can be played with the volume turned down or with headphones so the kids can practice without disturbing the peace.

  • Music Gatherings: Believe it or not, we’ve gathered with other boaters where someone pulls out a guitar, another a ukulele, and we all sing together. Using the Chord Book app, we can share lyrics and chords easily. These spontaneous jam sessions are unforgettable!

  • Lessons Onboard: Our kids continue voice and piano lessons remotely, which keeps their skills sharp.

Creative Pursuits & Quiet Hobbies

Not every hobby has to be athletic or loud. Life on the Loop is also a great opportunity to dive into creative and introspective pastimes:

  • Crafting & Journaling: We brought sewing supplies, sketchbooks, and journals. It’s satisfying to create something by hand or document the journey in a personal way.

  • Reading & Libraries: Reading is one of our favorite pastimes. Wherever we go, we seek out libraries and often come away with local knowledge or inspiration for our next stop.

Exploring New Passions Together

The Great Loop inspires you to try new things as a family:

  • Museums & History: Visiting local museums supports learning and adds a layer of richness to our travels.

  • Shared Adventures: Activities like paddleboarding or joining a local pickleball game create lasting memories and sometimes spark new interests.

The Great Loop isn’t about giving up what you love—it’s about finding ways to carry those passions with you. Whether it’s through local parks, spontaneous music nights, or exploring museums, cruising gives you the freedom to embrace both old and new hobbies.
