Instagram vs. Reality: The Truth About Cruising Full-Time

If you’ve ever scrolled through social media and thought, Wow, living on a boat looks incredible!, you’re not wrong. Cruising is full of adventure, stunning scenery, and unforgettable experiences. But what you don’t always see are the less glamorous moments—the ones that happen between the sunset photos and the perfectly framed dolphin videos.

So, let’s take a fun, side-by-side look at Instagram vs. Reality when it comes to full-time life on the water.

1️⃣ The Morning View

📸 Instagram: Waking up to a peaceful sunrise over calm water, coffee in hand, with dolphins playing in the distance.

😅 Reality: Waking up to the anchor alarm blaring because the wind shifted at 3 AM, stumbling out in pajamas to check the GPS, and realizing your coffee is cold because you got distracted fixing something.

2️⃣ Docking Like a Pro

📸 Instagram: Flawless docking in a beautiful marina, effortlessly tossing lines like a seasoned captain while smiling at admiring onlookers.

😅 Reality: Crosswinds, strong currents, and an audience of fellow boaters watching as you definitely don’t stick the landing. Your partner is yelling directions, a fender is in the wrong place, and you suddenly forget port from starboard.

3️⃣ Cooking Aboard

📸 Instagram: A beautifully plated seafood dinner, fresh from the local market, enjoyed with a glass of wine on deck.

😅 Reality: Chopping vegetables while bracing against rolling waves, dodging flying kitchen utensils, and trying to cook on a two-burner stove when someone forgot to fill the propane tank. Dinner is PB&J tonight.

4️⃣ Perfect Weather Days

📸 Instagram: Sunny skies, calm seas, and a gentle breeze filling the sails as you glide effortlessly toward your next destination.

😅 Reality: Three days of rain, a headwind in every direction, and that one storm front that appeared out of nowhere just as you pulled anchor.

5️⃣ The Laundry Situation

📸 Instagram: Crisp, sun-dried linens fluttering in the breeze on deck, giving off carefree tropical vibes.

😅 Reality: Lugging bags of dirty laundry through town, hunting for a laundromat, and realizing you need quarters. Or worse—hand-washing clothes in a bucket and hoping they dry before the next rainstorm.

6️⃣ Wildlife Encounters

📸 Instagram: Playful dolphins swimming alongside the boat, curious manatees in the marina, and stunning birds soaring overhead.

😅 Reality: Mosquitoes, no-see-ums, and that one seagull that stole your sandwich right off your plate.

7️⃣ Boat Maintenance

📸 Instagram: A clean, polished deck, neatly coiled lines, and a boat that looks straight out of a magazine.

😅 Reality: Something is always broken. There’s a leak somewhere, an engine part that needs replacing, and a project that was supposed to take one hour but somehow took all day.

8️⃣ Social Life

📸 Instagram: Sundowners with new boating friends, swapping stories at a tiki bar, and feeling like part of an amazing floating community.

😅 Reality: Spending three days alone at anchor because the weather trapped you there, sending texts that won’t go through because of spotty cell service, and wondering if it’s weird to talk to your boat like it’s a person.

9️⃣ Grocery Shopping

📸 Instagram: Stocking up at a charming waterfront market, filling your basket with fresh fruit, seafood, and local delicacies.

😅 Reality: Walking two miles to the nearest store, hauling bags of groceries back in the heat, and realizing you forgot the one thing you went for.

The Reality Check

At the end of the day, cruising full-time is both beautiful and challenging. The hard days don’t make it any less amazing—they just make it real. The unexpected breakdowns, weather delays, and tough moments are all part of the adventure.

Would I trade the struggles for an easier lifestyle? Not a chance. Because the reality—messy, unpredictable, and all—is what makes this journey so unforgettable.
