Five Times We Threw Out the Plan (and What We Learned)
No matter how carefully you plan your Loop adventure, life on the water has a way of rewriting your itinerary. Weather, tides, lock closures, and even simple family priorities mean that every cruiser will have to adapt at some point.
Over the course of our journey, we learned that the detours (whether planned or forced) often became the most memorable parts of the trip. Here are five times we threw out the plan and what each experience taught us about flexibility, exploration, and enjoying the moment.
1. Halloween in Henry, Illinois
Sometimes the “plan” isn’t about distance or schedules, it’s about the people on board. Our kids, 8 and 10 at the time, were set on trick-or-treating. It was October 30, and the next stop on our route didn’t have a great neighborhood for trick-or-treating families. Locals recommended we stay put for a day, and we ended up having the most fun night in Henry, IL, watching our kids enjoy Halloween like any land-based family would.
Lesson learned: flexibility can create magical moments.
2. Waiting Out Hurricane Debby in Elizabeth City
Storms will always have the final say. We arrived in Elizabeth City as the edge of Hurricane Debby hit. The locals helped us tie up in a spot that offered the best protection, and we ended up staying nearly a week because of the weather. While we couldn’t move, we discovered the charm of the town, visited the local museum, sampled a variety of restaurants, and swapped stories with seasoned sailors.
Lesson learned: sometimes the best experiences come from being forced to slow down.
3. Lock Delays in Chicago
During our Great Loop adventure, some Chicago locks were under construction and only reopened on October 1. Commercial traffic had priority, so recreational boats (including us) had to wait. The delay meant we spent extra time exploring West and Northern Michigan, soaking in quiet harbors, hidden anchorages, and scenic cruising that we might have skipped if we’d stuck to the original schedule.
Lesson learned: delays can turn into unexpected adventures.
4. Crystal River, Florida: Tides, Shoals, and Patience
Groundings happen, and Crystal River tested our patience. Low water and shoals meant getting out to the Gulf required careful timing with the tides. It took three attempts over three separate days to safely navigate the passage. But while we waited, we enjoyed the Manatee Festival and discovered charming spots along the river.
Lesson learned: sometimes a bump in the plan leads to unique experiences you’d otherwise miss.
5. Florida Keys Friend Rendezvous
Cruising with friends adds another layer of flexibility. We adjusted our plans to meet up with other boating friends in the Keys and to work our way toward the Dry Tortugas. Passage timing relied on both weather and safety, but those adjustments allowed us to share experiences, learn from fellow cruisers, and create memories that wouldn’t have happened on a rigid schedule.
Lesson learned: collaborative flexibility enriches the journey.
Bottom Line:
No matter how meticulously you plan, things will change. Weather, locks, tides, or simply the whims of life on board mean you’ll have to adapt. The key is to view reroutes not as setbacks, but as opportunities—to explore, connect, and savor the unexpected.
