Upgrading Your Boat Mid-Loop: What You Need to Know
🛥️ Can You Switch Boats During the Loop?
Yes, and some Loopers do! Some realize their first boat isn’t quite the right fit, while others spot the “forever boat” at a marina or online. Life changes, and so can your boat. The good news? It’s completely doable, even in the middle of your Great Loop adventure.
That said, it takes a little planning to make the handoff smooth.
🧾 1. Logistics of Selling and Buying While Looping
Here’s what to keep in mind:
Where will the transition happen? Choose a marina or city with good brokerage services and surveyor availability.
Can you stay aboard during the sale? Some marinas allow it, some don’t. If not, plan for nearby short-term lodging or a rental boat.
What about documentation? Work with a broker or documentation specialist to handle transfer of titles/registration (especially for USCG documented vessels).
👉 Tip: Some Loopers pre-list their boat “for sale by owner” while still cruising, then finalize once an offer comes in near a good handoff point.
🛡️ 2. Update Your Insurance + Registration
Your insurance policy won’t automatically transfer to your new boat, and neither will your registration.
Get quotes before the purchase. Insurers may require a survey and often restrict coverage based on age, cruising grounds, or hull type.
Pause & transfer. Cancel your old policy and start a new one before moving aboard your new vessel.
State vs. USCG documentation: If your new vessel is documented with the Coast Guard, there’s additional paperwork—but it may simplify travel.
👉 Be upfront with insurers about your liveaboard status and cruising route. Looping is considered safe compared to bluewater sailing, but underwriters still want to know where you’re going and what systems are on board.
🧳 3. Transferring Gear: Don’t Forget the Essentials
Packing up one boat and outfitting another is like moving houses, but afloat.
Make a checklist for:
Navigation gear (charts, tablets, AIS units)
Galley supplies
Safety equipment (life jackets, flares, EPIRBs)
Personal items and clothing
Spare parts, oil, filters, etc.
Plan for:
Temporary storage, if needed between boats
Reinstalling mounts for solar, dinghy davits, or electronics
Replacing what doesn’t fit or work with your new setup
👉 Personal Touch: Label your cords, chargers, and gear bags ahead of time to avoid confusion when you start moving things back onboard.
⏳ 4. Will It Slow You Down?
It might—but it doesn’t have to derail your Loop.
Build in some buffer time.
Communicate with the marina staff, surveyors, and your broker to line things up in advance.
Know that this part of your Loop is still part of your Loop—it’s all part of the adventure.
Some Loopers take this transition opportunity to slow down, visit family, or explore by land while the paperwork gets sorted.
🗺️ 5. What Happens to Your Loop Map + Burgee?
If you switch boats, your AGLCA membership follows you, not your hull. Just update your vessel info in your member portal.
If you’re tracking your Loop digitally or in a logbook:
Note the boat switch date and location
Keep both routes together in your log—it’s all one journey
Some folks frame their burgee with both boat names and dates—it makes a great keepsake!
💬 Final Thoughts
Upgrading mid-Loop isn’t just possible—it can be a really positive turning point. With the right prep, you can switch boats smoothly, stay on track, and maybe even fall in love with cruising all over again.
Whether you’re trading up for more comfort or downsizing to something simpler, trust that you’re still on your Loop, and your story just got more interesting.
