Frequently asked questions.

Whether you’re dreaming about America’s Great Loop, already underway, or looking to work remotely while living aboard, we’re here to help.

Below are answers to some of the most common questions we receive.

🚤 About Loop Life Academy

What is Loop Life Academy?

Loop Life Academy offers trusted resources, tools, and support for individuals living or traveling by boat, particularly those navigating the Great Loop or embracing full-time boating life. We offer courses, travel journals, books, and coaching to help you plan confidently and cruise joyfully.

Who is behind Loop Life Academy?

Loop Life Academy was founded by Alison Major, who completed the Great Loop with her husband and two kids while working remotely and homeschooling aboard their sailboat. She now shares her experience through educational products, coaching, and community support.

Is Loop Life Academy only for Great Loopers?

Not at all! While many of our resources are designed with Great Loopers in mind, they’re also helpful for coastal cruisers, liveaboards, weekend boaters, and even RVers exploring nomadic life.

🧭 Planning & Cruising the Great Loop

What is the Great Loop?

The Great Loop is a roughly 6,000-mile circumnavigation of the eastern U.S. and Canada by water. It includes the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, the Great Lakes, inland rivers, and the Gulf of Mexico.

Where should I start if I’m just dreaming about the Loop?

Check out our free Great Loop Planning Checklist and our blog, which are great places to begin. If you’re looking for more structure, our course Plan Your Loop walks you through each phase of preparation.

How long does it take to complete the Great Loop?

Most Loopers take 9–14 months to complete the journey, following the seasons. Some do it faster, others stretch it out over years.

Can families do the Loop?

Absolutely! We did it with kids, and we’re not the only ones. Check out our family-focused blog posts, travel journals for kids, and badges through Cruiser Scouts.

Can I really work remotely while cruising?

Yes—but it takes planning. Our book Remote Work Afloat (more at RemoteWorkAfloat.com) covers how to set up your mobile office, stay connected, manage time zones, and handle distractions while living on the water.

What internet solutions do you recommend for cruisers?
