Island Time on Beaver Island

If Mackinac Island is the polished resort queen of northern Michigan, Beaver Island is her eccentric cousin—the kind who tells wild stories and invites you in for a pint. Remote, fascinating, and full of character, Beaver Island offers a very different flavor of island life on the Great Loop.

A History Like No Other

Beaver Island’s past is unlike anywhere else in the Great Lakes. In the mid-1800s, James Jesse Strang declared himself King of Beaver Island and led a Mormon splinter group here. His reign was short-lived (he was assassinated in 1856), but his story still lingers in local lore.

After Strang’s fall, Irish immigrants arrived in large numbers, giving Beaver Island its lasting identity as “America’s Emerald Isle.” The heritage shows up everywhere—from the surnames on mailboxes to the island’s music festivals.

Life Slows Down Here

The ferry from Charlevoix brings most visitors, but cruisers who make the trip by boat find something even more special: a true sense of island time. Life here moves at a gentler pace. Expect sandy beaches, quiet trails, and a handful of welcoming local businesses.

Grab a bike or rent a scooter, and you can explore much of the island in a day. Don’t miss:

  • Paradise Bay – The main harbor, where you’ll tie up at the marina or anchor out.

  • Beaver Head Light – A historic lighthouse perched dramatically above Lake Michigan.

  • The Toy Museum – A quirky, homespun collection that perfectly captures the island’s personality.

  • Local Pubs – Irish heritage means you’re never far from a good pint and a bit of live music.

Why Loopers Love It

For cruisers, Beaver Island is both a logistical and cultural detour worth making. It’s further off the beaten path than most Great Loop stops, but that’s part of the magic. You’ll find transient slips at St. James Harbor, good anchoring options, and easy walking access to groceries, restaurants, and the island’s small-town charm.

Families especially appreciate the beaches, bike-friendly roads, and safe, laid-back vibe. It’s the kind of place where kids can roam a little and adults can actually exhale.

The Quirky Crown Jewel of Lake Michigan

Beaver Island doesn’t try to be anything other than itself—and that’s exactly why it sticks with you. It’s a place of stories: shipwrecks, kings, Irish ballads, and quiet evenings watching the sun dip into the lake. For Loopers looking to experience something different, this little island delivers in spades.

So when you’re plotting your course through northern Lake Michigan, consider veering a bit west. Beaver Island may not be on every cruiser’s itinerary, but those who make the trip often find it becomes one of their most talked-about stops.
