Sleeping Bear Dunes by Boat: How to Visit on the Loop
If there’s one spot on Michigan’s Lake Michigan shoreline that makes boaters stop and stare, it’s Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Towering dunes rise dramatically above the water, framing beaches that look more like the Caribbean than the Midwest. It’s one of those places where photos never do it justice—you just have to see it for yourself.
And if you’re cruising the Great Loop, the good news is: you can. With a little planning, Sleeping Bear can be part of your route.
The Legend of the Sleeping Bear
The name comes from an Anishinaabe story of a mother bear and her two cubs who swam across Lake Michigan to escape a fire. The mother reached shore and waited on a bluff for her cubs, who never arrived. The Great Spirit created two islands (North and South Manitou) to honor the cubs, and the mother became the dune itself.
It’s a story of love, loss, and resilience—and it gives the dunes a sense of depth beyond their natural beauty.
How to Get There by Boat
Sleeping Bear Dunes doesn’t have a marina right at its base, so you’ll need to plan your stop a little strategically. We anchored our boat just off the beach for a quick afternoon of exploring the beach, climbing the dune (for those who could make it) and enjoying the scenery.
Leland Harbor is the closest convenient port. From here, you can rent a car and make the short trip into the park. Leland itself is a gem, with its historic “Fishtown” district of shanties and shops right on the water.
Frankfort is another good option if you’re coming from the south. It’s a bit farther, but still an easy gateway into the park.
How to Get There by Boat
Sleeping Bear Dunes doesn’t have a marina tucked right at its base, so you’ll need to think a little creatively about your stop. For us, anchoring just off the beach was the simplest way to visit. We took the dinghy ashore, splashed in the waves, and hiked the dune straight from the sand. It made for an unforgettable afternoon and required no logistics beyond dropping the hook.
If you prefer a harbor, Leland Harbor is the closest option. It’s a charming stop in its own right, with historic Fishtown just steps from the dock. From there, some cruisers will call a taxi or rideshare to get into the park, but honestly, if you’re comfortable anchoring, going straight to the dunes by boat is more fun and feels like the “back door” approach.
Frankfort works if you’re coming from the south and want a marina day. It’s farther from the dunes, but still a viable jumping-off point.
What Not to Miss
The Dune Climb – A rite of passage for kids (and adults). Just be warned—it’s a workout!
Manitou Islands – If you’ve got the weather window, anchoring near the islands gives you a wild, quiet experience of the park that day-trippers rarely see.
Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive – If you end up renting a car, this is a winding loop with overlooks that drop dramatically down to the lake. Standing at the top of the dune, with water stretching forever in every direction, is unforgettable.
How Much Time to Spend
Some destinations beg for a week, but Sleeping Bear Dunes isn’t one of them. You can enjoy its best features in a single afternoon—swimming, climbing, picnicking, and soaking up the epic views. Sure, there are trails and scenic drives if you happen to have a car, but for Loopers by boat, think of this stop as a “half-day wonder.” Anchor, play hard, take in the scenery, and sail away with sandy feet and tired legs.
Why It’s Worth It
Sleeping Bear is often called one of the most beautiful places in America, and once you see it, you’ll understand why. On the Loop, it’s a reminder to pause, linger, and let natural wonders take your breath away.
