Michigan’s Hidden Gems for Loopers: Beyond Mackinac

Mackinac Island gets most of the glory when Loopers talk about cruising through Michigan—and for good reason. But if you only hit Mackinac, you’re missing out on some of the state’s best-kept secrets. Michigan’s stretch of the Great Loop is packed with small towns, quiet anchorages, and natural wonders that make it worth slowing down for a while.

Here are a few of my favorite “hidden gems” to look for beyond Mackinac:

Beaver Island

Remote, quirky, and full of history, Beaver Island feels like stepping into another world. It’s about 30 miles offshore, so it requires a weather window, but the reward is a peaceful island community with Irish roots (they even had a self-proclaimed king at one point!). It’s also one of the best stargazing spots in Michigan thanks to low light pollution.

Petoskey & Charlevoix

If small-town charm is your thing, these Lake Michigan ports will make you want to linger. Charlevoix has the famous “mushroom houses” designed by Earl Young, while Petoskey is known for its namesake stones (which kids love to hunt for along the beach). Both towns are walkable, with shops, dining, and easy marina access.

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

Towering sand dunes, hidden beaches, and some of the most stunning views in the state. You’ll want to plan ahead here since marina space can be limited, but even a day trip inland is worth the detour. The legend of the “sleeping bear” adds a layer of storytelling that makes this spot memorable, especially for families.

North Channel Gateway

As you move toward the Canadian border, ports like Detour and Drummond Island become staging areas for crossing into the North Channel. They’re often overlooked, but these towns have their own charms—quiet anchorages, friendly marinas, and a sense of anticipation as you prepare for one of the most celebrated cruising grounds on the Loop.

Why It’s Worth Going Beyond Mackinac

Looping isn’t just about checking off the iconic stops. It’s about finding the places that surprise you—the towns you’d never visit otherwise, the anchorages that give you a perfect sunset, the trails and beaches that aren’t in every guidebook.

So yes, enjoy Mackinac (eat the fudge, take the carriage ride, bike the loop). But when you cast off, don’t rush south. Give yourself time to explore Michigan’s hidden gems. You might just find that the places between the headliners end up being your favorites.
