Discovering Docktails: A Fun and Inclusive Tradition on the Great Loop

Above is a screenshot from the Nebo App. You can easily find other AGLCA members by the burgee next to their name and message them from within the app.

What are Docktails?

"Docktails" is a term used in the boating community to describe informal social gatherings held on docks or boats. These gatherings are an excellent way for boaters to unwind, share stories, and enjoy each other's company. Typically, "docktails" involve everyone bringing their beverage of choice, whether a cocktail, soft drink, or even just water.

Do You Have to Drink Alcohol?

Absolutely not! The great thing about docktails is that there's no requirement to drink alcohol. The focus is on socializing and enjoying the company of fellow boaters, not on the type of drink in your hand.

Many people choose non-alcoholic beverages like lemonade, soda, or sparkling water. It's all about what you're comfortable with, and no one will bat an eye at your choice.

How Do You Find Docktails?

Finding or organizing docktails is reasonably straightforward. It's as simple as looking around your anchorage or marina and finding boats with the AGLCA burgee, then knocking on their hull and making an invitation. Another easy way to get an invite is to use the Nebo App (used by many Loopers) and message them with an invitation there.

It's a good idea to contact the local boating community or fellow Loopers to see if there are any planned docktails events. If you're organizing your own, simply invite others to the dock or marina and emphasize that everyone should bring their own drink of choice.

Many Loopers will snap a photo of their time together and post about their docktail gatherings in social media groups.

What Are Games Good for Docktails?

Docktails can be a fantastic opportunity to play some light-hearted games. Here are a few suggestions:

  • Trivia: Create a game based on boating, local landmarks, or general knowledge. Loop Life Academy has a trivia playlist on YouTube you could check out!

  • Charades: A classic and fun game that gets everyone laughing and involved. You can easily download an app for your phone to facilitate a game.

  • Pictionary: Another creative and entertaining game that works well in a group setting.

Getting to know other cruisers, whether Loopers or not, is a fun way to socialize and gain more perspective and stories during your adventure.

Inclusion and Community

For those who have been sober for a while, many Loopers understand the concerns about being in environments where alcohol is present. From one sober Looper's experience, the Great Loop community is very welcoming and respectful of different choices regarding alcohol. Many Loopers enjoy non-alcoholic beverages and still have a wonderful time socializing and forming connections.

Whether you're a seasoned Looper or just starting your journey, docktails offer a chance to connect with others and share in the camaraderie of the boating life while respecting each other's preferences and choices.
