Favorite Small-Town Stops in Georgian Bay (On Our List!)

Georgian Bay is on our Loop “must-see” list for a reason. Even though we haven’t cruised these waters yet, the stories from other Loopers and Canadian cruising guides paint a picture that’s hard to resist: charming small towns, friendly marinas, local treats, and the kind of scenery that makes you want to linger.

Here are a few towns we’re excited to visit, along with what makes them special:

📸 Parry Sound

Known for its picturesque harbor and artsy downtown, Parry Sound often pops up as a favorite stop for cruisers looking to stretch their legs. There are local shops, a waterfront trail, and plenty of small cafes perfect for a morning coffee break.

⚓️ Pointe au Baril

This is the quintessential Georgian Bay stop for boaters. Many Looper blogs mention the series of small islands and sheltered bays that make it feel like a world of its own. With well-protected anchorages and easy access to local services, it’s a spot that’s high on our radar.

🏛️ Midland

With its mix of history and access to nearby parks, Midland is another Looper favorite. It’s close to the Sainte-Marie among the Hurons historic site and offers a chance to explore local museums, bakeries, and waterfront walks.

🤿 Tobermory

(though a bit north on the Bruce Peninsula)

Famous for its crystal-clear waters and dive sites, Tobermory is often listed as a must-visit for boaters venturing into Georgian Bay. Even if we only stop for a night, it seems like a place worth exploring.

🛥️ Little Current

While technically on Manitoulin Island, many cruisers use Little Current as a base for exploring the area. The swing bridge, quaint shops, and marina services make it a practical stop that’s also charming.

Why These Stops Matter

Even if you’re not planning to linger for days at a time, having a short list of towns can make your planning easier. Each one offers a mix of provisioning, sightseeing, and opportunities to connect with other cruisers. And because Georgian Bay is so vast, knowing where to stop ahead of time can help you pace your cruise while keeping your options open.
