Top Anchorages in the North Channel Every Looper Should Visit

Ask just about any Looper who’s cruised the North Channel and you’ll hear the same thing: it’s magical. Granite cliffs, clear water, quiet coves, and a sense of remoteness that’s hard to find anywhere else on the Great Loop. While we haven’t made it there yet ourselves, I’ve talked with plenty of cruisers who have, and the same anchorages come up again and again as must-visits.

Here are a few favorites to put on your list:

⚓️ Baie Fine

Often compared to a Canadian fjord, this long, narrow inlet is surrounded by towering white quartz cliffs. Many cruisers say it feels like stepping into another world. You can anchor along the way or head all the way back to The Pool, where you’ll find a calm basin and hiking trails leading to Topaz Lake.

⚓️ Covered Portage Cove

This anchorage is a Looper classic. With its dramatic rock entrance and protected anchoring area inside, it’s both stunning and practical. Some even say it’s the most photographed anchorage in the North Channel.

⚓️ The Benjamins

(South Benjamin and North Benjamin Islands)

These pink granite islands are iconic for a reason. Anchor between them or tuck in close for a quiet night, then explore the shoreline by dinghy or kayak. The sunsets here are legendary.

⚓️ Little Current (as a base)

While not a wilderness anchorage, Little Current is often the jumping-off point for exploring the North Channel. You’ll find marinas, provisioning, and the famous Swing Bridge that connects to Manitoulin Island.

Of course, these are just a handful of the options. The truth is, the North Channel is packed with anchorages where you can have an entire bay to yourself. That’s part of the draw—it feels remote and wild, even though you’re still within reach of small towns when you need them.

If you’re planning your Loop route, give yourself time here. Many cruisers who rush through Canada end up wishing they had lingered in Georgian Bay and the North Channel. From what I’ve heard, this is where you slow down, drop the hook, and just be.
